Global consultancy major Deloitte is planning to increase its India headcount from 8,750 to 12,000 by 2010. The firm, which is in an expansion mode in India, wants more than 50% of the new recruits to service the growing demand for consultancy services from the Indian market itself. Confirming this, Deloitte Consulting India managing director Roopen Roy said the firm is planning to open more centres in the eastern parts of the country.

"The Indian market is becoming quite attractive. We are looking for options to expand in the east since a lot of our manufacturing and mining clients are expanding there," he said.

At present, Deloitte's two large offshore centres in India are based out of Hyderabad and Mumbai. Deloitte has identified India as an important country for global sourcing of talent. This was decided last week in a global consulting practice board meet held at Hyderabad.

"Eventually, we are looking at an India headcount of around 20,000 people by 2013-14. Currently, around 3,000 people are working on projects for Indian clients, with the balance for global projects. This ratio will also slowly change," Mr Roy added. He was talking to reporters on the sidelines of an ICT seminar held here on Friday.

In the Indian market, Deloitte's focus for the consulting business is in three verticals - strategy and operations, human capital and technology. "These are the areas where maximum growth is coming from the domestic market. The target sectors include manufacturing, pharma, banking, technology, media, telecom and infrastructure," said Mr Roy.

Deloitte's total worldwide revenues are currently at $23.5 billion, of which the consulting practice contributes around $9 billion.
